WHAT IS GLAUCOMA AND HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT?

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that lead to the progressive degeneration of the optic nerve, causing a loss of nerve tissue and potential blindness. The cause of these diseases are not always known, however, they can result in optic nerve damage through elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) or a restriction in blood supply to the nerve, also known as poor perfusion.

Either way, the optic nerve progressively loses viability, resulting in visual field or peripheral vision loss. This vision loss will usually first appear in the peripheral vision, a warning sign that Glaucoma may be present or on the horizon. A routine eye exam can often determine if you are predisposed to Glaucoma, steps you can take to prevent and/or treat it.

What causes digital eye strain and how can you prevent it?

Digital eye strain happens when screens reduce blinking, expose eyes to blue light, and demand prolonged focus. Symptoms include dry eyes, blurred vision, headaches, and neck pain. Prevent it with the 20-20-20 rule, proper screen brightness, correct viewing distance, and artificial tears if needed. The good news is that not only is eye strain common, but it’s often treatable.

What is Age-Related
Macular Degeneration?

AMD is a progressive eye disease that affects your central vision, and the ability to see fine details. If left untreated, people lose the ability to read, drive, and recognize faces. 2.5 million Canadians are affected by AMD. While age is the biggest risk factor for developing AMD, there are several others, including:

Smoking: Smoking can double your risk and accelerate its progression

Diet: Eating more total fat and less fruits and veggies can put you at risk

Genetics: Family history is a major risk factor

You can lower your risk of AMD by wearing sunglasses, staying active, and staying on top of your blood pressure, cholesterol, and weight. Regular eye exams can catch changes early, often before you notice any vision problems.
